First, Let me introduce you to two siblings. You have met them before and probably host them on a regular basis. These two also have close relatives that you also need to recognize.

I introduce you to I hope and how I wish. You see these two siblings are the thoughts that occupy your mind and take up so much space in your mind.

You're Stuck!

How often do these phrases I hope and how I wish or their close relative if only - occupy your thoughts? And if they have, what results have they produced?

You see these are thoughts that lead nowhere if that's all that you do. Unfortunately that's what a lot of people and they end up stuck at this stage.

Are you a Christian like I am, and you have prayed and fasted for a breakthrough. A breakthrough in your career or your business and it's yet to happen?  You are stuck at the stage of praying, hoping and wishing.

Here are 5 tips on how to achieve your goals

1. Have Smaller Goals

You can't think of how to achieve your goal without setting goals, S.M.A.R.T. goals. S.M.A.R.T. is an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-bound. Your goals need to follow the S.M.A.R.T. format so you can achieve them.

Break big goals to smaller ones. This way, you are encouraged to keep going on because as you complete the smaller goals you are motivated to press on.

For example, I recently had a big goal to host a workshop (and I did, it was excellent!). Some of the smaller goals I had included getting the location, preparing my materials, advertising. Each time I reached my smaller goal, I knew I was getting closer to achieving the big goal. It was a momentum booster, and I didn't feel overwhelmed.

Rosabeth Moss Kanter in Harvard Business Review Article advised against setting goals that are too big and distant.

Confidence is not an absence of fear or doubts. Rather confidence is demonstrated in the actions that you take.

2. Be Confident.

You must be confident to achieve your goals. You will get stuck in the if only and how I wish stage if you don't demonstrate confidence. Confidence is not an absence of fear or doubts. Rather confidence is demonstrated in the actions that you take. When you are afraid, ask yourself the reason for your fear. Turn the fear into a question, then find an answer.

When I prepared for my first Confidence Workshop, I was somewhat anxious as anyone would when preparing for something important. One time I got anxious about how I would manage my time. So I asked a question instead, how can I manage my time? As a result, I created an agenda. I went through the agenda as I would on the day of the workshop a few times. Consequently, I became more confident and less anxious about time management for the Workshop.

Find the questions behind your fear and answer it!

3. Have a Strategy.

How are you going to achieve your goals? What is your plan? One of the reasons for organizing my workshop was to engage with my local community. The workshop became my strategy to connecting with my community.

Do you want to be recognized at work? How are you going to make that happen?
Are you hoping to get that leadership position? Hoping for it isn't enough. What's your plan to be seen as the best choice? What actions are you taking to demonstrate your competence and abilities for the position (Confidence)?

Start planning on how to achieve your goals. Think outside the box and don't get bugged by irrelevant tasks. Irrelevant tasks are things that take your time as a professional but has no impact on advancing your career or business. An example includes volunteering for work tasks such office parties that has nothing to do with your expertise.

4. Work On Your Communication

It is important when thinking of how to achieve your goals to include a communication component. Without communication, no one knows what you can do or the depth of your expertise. You need to ask. You need to negotiate and it is essential you speak in the language of your audience.

If you can get the attention of your audience, be it your client, your boss or upper management, you are on your way you to success.Your ability to connect will open doors of opportunity for you, and it will lead to success. If you stay in the hoping and wishing zone, you are not communicating with anyone but yourself. What good is that? Learn the art of communication. Remember communication includes speaking and listening.

5. Make Use of Your Connections

Utilize the relationships you have to get you to the next level. I don't mean in a parasitic way but in a symbiotic way. Be helpful to others when you can so that in your time of need, they will be there for you. Whatever you sow, you reap. Look within your network and see those you who can help you get to the next level.

Don't be afraid to reach out to people you don't know either. That's how I got my first reference when I relocated to the United States. I walked into a Physical Therapy Clinic, introduced myself and asked if I could shadow the Physical Therapist. I had never met him before.

Don't be a hermit at work. You don't have to be a social butterfly to connect or network. Do it in your own way. Be deliberate about networking.

Last Word!

So how to achieve your goals goes beyond thinking obviously. Hence if you find yourself wishing that your boss should offer you a promotion or you have been praying to start your business or hoping your upper management will notice how hard you work, remember you need to act confidently and not just think.

Start doing!
